A private school founded in 1888, St. John’s Lutheran School provides kindergarten through 8th grade education to more than 240 students. Like many grade schools, St. John’s provides recycling education to their students.
Because of their size, they do not generate enough waste paper to have a free recycling roll-off container at their site. The school’s recycling educators and parent volunteers supported the program by transporting the program’s paper more than fifteen miles to a nearby recycling facility.
However, with the increasing cost of fuel to transport the recycling and concern over their carbon footprint, the school found themselves in a dilemma. Although teaching recycling and environmental awareness is an important part of their curriculum, the increasing costs threatened to reduce or end the program.
Through an employee Tree Towns found out about the St. Johns’ problem. We decided to form a community partnership with the school. By taking our corrugated and fiber board waste to the school, we were able to not only give them enough paper to earn them a free roll-off container, there is now enough collected that the school receives a monthly check for the waste paper!
