Color Customization Options for Backlit Acrylics

April 28, 2025 by Tree Towns Digital Decor

Lou Malnati’s TP Dining backlit acrylic featureAcrylic art has become increasingly popular in both residential and commercial spaces because it is a lightweight option that features rich, lively colors and stunning visual fidelity. However, there is no need to stop at just an art piece! Backlit acrylics can breathe new life into anything from a work of art to the paneling on a business’s walls.

Because multiple options are available for color customization in backlit acrylics, it is useful for anyone considering this option to understand how backlighting works and how it might impact their space. In order to choose colors and styles for backlit acrylics, the business will first need to select the type of acrylic installation it uses.

Is it a picture frame, and if so, how deep is the frame? Is it an acrylic panel, and if so, how is it mounted to the wall? These are just a few considerations that will impact which types of lighting will work best, provide even coverage, and avoid some spots being brighter than others.

What Colors Are Available for Backlit Acrylics?

Backlit acrylics are incredibly flexible in their capacity for color customization. The hue of the backlight is up to the customer, and lights can be made in any shade. Some of the most common include bright white for crisp, modern spaces and a warmer, light orange glow, which is ideal for rustic, comforting rooms.

Choosing a Backlight Color

During the selection process for your backlighting color, there are a few important things to consider:

Mood

Colors do more than boost the aesthetic appeal; they can also influence the mood of anyone who sees them. Consider how differently a person would feel if they saw your logo illuminated on all sides by a red glow versus how that same logo might look in a cool blue.

Would red illumination make your company look intense and innovative, or does the impression lean more toward the aggressive? Does blue contribute a sense of calm and relaxation, or does it imply feelings of laziness and tiredness?

The backlight’s color will play with the colors of the existing acrylic display. Do they work well together? For instance, if your business displays a vibrantly green bamboo forest artwork, placing a purple backlight behind it could create a dull, muddy color. On the other hand, a soft white or subtle yellow can mimic organic lighting and bring the forest to life.

Illumination

Backlit acrylics can provide a distinctive approach to illumination. If used to light up a space, consider how well the backlights can do that job. In general, white, orange, and blue lights are better at creating enough illumination to see compared to red, purple, and green lights.

Other Color Considerations

Any other considerations for color customization in your backlit acrylics will depend on the type of acrylic installation you are illuminating. Many options are available; some backlights rest securely behind a piece of artwork, providing their full lighting through the picture itself, with no leaking from the sides.

In other cases, a panel may intentionally use lights installed within the sides of the frame to create a rich, even glow around the feature. Backlights work on more than just art. Acrylic panels, which can serve as walls or ceilings, can also be backlit effectively.

Use these lights to create illumination without lamps or light bulbs, or to light up a pathway to guide customers. The right applications for your business will vary based on the types of services you offer and your target demographic.

While it is possible to upgrade acrylics with backlights later, you can also begin with this strategy from the get-go. If you do, make sure that you test other lighting options in your space first to understand how bright a light needs to be in order to make a meaningful contribution.

Upgrade Your Space with Backlit Acrylics

However, simply choosing to illuminate your acrylic installations is only the first step; you also need to carefully select the hue and tone of the backlight’s color.

If you aren’t sure where to start, the professionals at Tree Towns can help you visualize what your space would look like under a variety of backlights. Contact Tree Towns to share your ideas about your space, learn more about the acrylic backlight options available for your use case, and get started on a custom order that will breathe new life into your company!
