How Businesses Can Effectively Plan Their Acoustic Panel Layout

August 25, 2025 by Tree Towns Digital Decor

sound absorbing panels installed on the wallAny business must consider how people feel while inside its walls. A negative experience here could lead to costly consequences, such as customers who never return or a high turnover rate, as employees become uncomfortable and leave. Acoustic art panels can alleviate these issues without compromising your business’s aesthetics; in fact, they can even enhance how your business visually presents itself.

Acoustic art panels are customizable installations that can feature designs, patterns, images, and more, created specifically for your space. They provide a textured or absorptive surface that captures sound waves before they bounce off the wall and return into the room. By decreasing the sound waves that reverberate back toward people inside the space, acoustic art panels can lower volume, reduce echo, and improve the comfort of those present.

Are Acoustic Panels Worth It?

No public space is going to be entirely silent, so it is normal for business owners to wonder whether reducing the noise in their space will actually make a meaningful difference. Some businesses are quiet enough that the ambient noise is no issue, but your rooms may be louder (and by extension, more damaging) than you might realize.

Studies have shown that spaces with around 45 dB ambient noise were the best for cognitive performance and sustained attention. When noise levels increased to 60 dB, some people were able to continue to focus, but their measurable stress levels rose. Given that normal conversations often take place at 60+ decibels (depending on the participants), your business may be more in need of acoustic control than you think. You can reap benefits such as:

  • Intelligible speech: When your customers and employees can hear each other, there will be fewer miscommunications, leading to better service and more efficient work.
  • Privacy: In some types of businesses, such as medical facilities, visitor confidentiality is non-negotiable, and reducing noise keeps private conversations from reaching individuals who do not need to hear them.
  • Customer comfort: Studies show that customers spend less time in businesses that they deem too loud, decreasing engagement with the brand and potential to spend.
  • Employee well-being: Researchers have demonstrated that employees’ performance tends to decrease consistently in relation to increasing noise, leading to more mistakes, decreased productivity, and less satisfied workers

The Best Acoustic Panel Layout for a Business

If you are ready to install acoustic panels in your business, it is helpful to understand how to use them correctly. Failure to plan your layout properly could undercut the benefits of the panels by reducing their efficacy. A few things to think about include:

  • sound panels installed on the roofLocation: Place panels at the same height level as the main sources of noise. For most offices, this will be between four and six feet high, corresponding to the height of a person’s mouth when they are sitting or standing.
  • Spacing: Panels should have some space between each other. Typically, at least three inches is the bare minimum, but a foot or more is common with larger panels. Larger individual panels require greater space between them.
  • Number: Businesses need not cover their entire wall space with panels. Professional recommendations typically suggest that anywhere from 20% to 40% of the wall be covered with panels. This layout reduces noise while retaining a natural ambiance.
  • Orientation: Panels will be facing toward a room’s active spaces, but do not neglect what’s above you. Acoustic art panels can also be affixed or suspended from the ceiling, where noise can escape and echo. If you have tall ceilings or open spaces above customers, consider adding some ceiling panels as well.

Will Acoustic Panels Soundproof a Business?

In short, no; acoustic panels will not soundproof your business. This is because soundproofing does not mean what most people think it means. Sound absorption, the task that acoustic wall panels perform, stops sound from bouncing around inside a space.

Soundproofing, on the other hand, is designed to prevent sounds from transferring from one space to another, such as from the room next door into yours. If you are looking for soundproofing (outside sounds) in addition to sound absorption (inside sounds), alternative options are available to complement acoustic panels and create a comfortable space.
